A custom tailor is like a craftsman of identity — stitching together cloth not just to fit your body, but to reflect your personality. The beauty of going bespoke is that you get control over every small detail: lapel width, fabric weight, stitch colors, pocket styles, and more. But beyond fit, color harmony is what truly ensures you look sharp, polished, and intentional.

Here’s a short guide to help you (or your clients) match suits with shirts and shoes confidently.

Why Go Custom?

  • Perfect fit. Off-the-rack suits often compromise in one area or another (shoulders, waist, sleeve length). A tailor can tweak each point.
  • Choice of materials & details. You can pick the fabric weight, lining, buttons, lapel style, and more.
  • Unique style. Custom gives you flexibility to stand out or remain classic, depending on your taste.

Matching Suit, Shirt & Shoe Colors

1. The rule of wearing shoes: Always pair shoes thoughtfully

As a general “easy rule”, there are three main dress shoe colors: black, brown, and burgundy — and five common suit colors: light gray, dark gray/charcoal, navy, brown, and black.

Black suits  — they should almost always be worn with black shoes in formal settings.

Grey (light or charcoal) and navy suits are the most versatile — black, brown, or burgundy depending on shade and formality are typically accepted.

Brown suits – although not a common color, it’s best paired with brown or burgundy shoes (lighter browns for daytime, darker for more formal).

Burgundy/oxblood shoes bring more character and are great when you want a slightly creative but still refined look.

Also: your belt should match your shoes — same leather tone, if possible.

2. Shirt Colors That “Always Work”

Trouble choosing a shirt to match on that early morning ?  No worries, we got you covered !

  • White shirt — universally safe, crisp, and formal.
  • Light blue shirts — offers a bit of color while remaining subtle with many suit shades.

From there, you can branch out smartly:

Tips for Tailors & Clients

  1. Bring your shoes to fittings. This helps to see the harmony of the whole outfit under natural light.
  2. Ask for fabric swatches for shirt and tie inspiration when choosing suit materials.
  3. Start neutral — once you’re comfortable, you can introduce more personality (e.g., colored lining, patterned pocket square, unusual shoe tones).
